NICET Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems (ITFAS) - Level 1

The Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems certification program is for engineering technicians engaged in the performance, documentation, planning, and coordination of periodic inspection and testing of existing fire alarm systems and their components (does not include commissioning of new systems). The candidate for NICET certification at Level I in Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems should have a minimum of 6 
months of experience in the inspection and testing of fire alarm and suppression interfaces and have the basic knowledge and experience.

The Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems exam is delivered on a computer at Pearson Vue Testing Centers. 

NICET has updated the Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems exams on October 7, 2024. 

Content Outline:

  •  Plan and Coordinate Work (Questions related to these tasks make up 7-17% of the exam.) 
    • Determine the number, type, and location of devices to be inspected and/or tested. Coordinate with the owner/building manager during inspection and testing. 
    • Identify and apply the appropriate inspection and testing requirements for the job.
    • Issue notifications to applicable parties of testing and completion as needed.
    • Identify findings and issue appropriate notifications to applicable parties.
    • Ensure the restoration of the fire alarm system.
    • File documentation and reports. 
  • Inspect Equipment (Questions related to these tasks make up 25-35% of the exam.) 
    • Inspect system control units. 
    • Inspect system power supplies wiring and connections. 
    • Inspect initiating devices. 
    • Inspect notification appliances. 
    • Inspect equipment for off-premises signaling. 
    • Inspect system wiring and connections. 
  • Test Functionality (Questions related to these tasks make up 46-56% of the exam.) 
    • Test functionality of system control units.
    • Test functionality of power supplies.
    • Test functionality of initiating devices and circuits.
    • Test functionality of notification appliances and circuits.
    • Test functionality of equipment and circuits for off-premises signaling.
    • Test functionality of basic interfaces. 
  • Maintain Devices (Questions related to these tasks make up 3-13% of the exam.) 
    • Replace batteries as needed. 
    • Identify replacement devices as needed. 
    • Clean devices as needed.

Note: Candidates may bring older or newer editions—instead of the editions listed above—at their own risk.
